Safety data sheets: what they are and who needs one

What a safety data sheet covers and who will ask you for one.

Written by Nick Lewis
A safety data sheet describes a product's hazards, composition, first aid, handling and storage and transport information. Read next: CLP labelling, safety data sheets and barcodes.

A safety data sheet (SDS) is the 16-section document that describes a chemical product: its hazards, composition, first aid, safe handling and storage, and transport information.

  • Every product has its own safety data sheet, and these are provided for the products you order.

  • Marketplaces, retailers, couriers, fulfilment partners, insurers and business customers often ask for them, so keep them on file.

  • If you supply hazardous products to trade or business customers, you must give them a safety data sheet. Tell us if you plan to supply trade customers, so we can discuss the safety data sheets you need.

  • Safety data sheets are revised when a formula or its classification changes. Always use the latest version we provide.

Your next step: Keep the safety data sheet for each product you sell on file, and tell us if you will supply trade customers.
